Sun, Sea and Shot Tourism: An Emerging Form of Temporary Tourism During Corona Pandemic

ABSTRACT

Temporary forms of tourism has ben emerged as boon for the countries and destination who were unable to attract the visitors and tourists from the tourism generating zones. Sun, Sea and Shot tourism has provided an opportunity to explore the new horizon of temporary tourism. The article has tried to focus on the need of promoting temporary forms of tourism like Vaccination Tourism, Corona tourism and others for the underdeveloped tourism destinations. The Corona time will never come again to provide the creativity and innovation for evolving tourism destinations.

INTRODUCTION

The evolution of tourism goes back to thousands of years ago however that time it was in different form and known by different names in different parts of the world. Tourism changed its forms and purposes in a interesting ways during the last three decades. And now we have the forms which was beyond our imagination forty years ago. Tourism of today is more business oriented and fun loving, even serious form of tourism are also there which contributes in community development and nature conservation. Tourism of today would not be remained the same in next fifty years from today. Rapid advancement in technologies would create new forms, process and temporary types of tourism needs.  People will look for short haul travel and tourism destination than long haul tourism due to scarcity of time and busy work schedules. 

In recent years Corona pandemic has locked the people inside their houses due to fear of infection. Several countries have put the ban on international and domestic travels. While people have been waiting for vaccine and destination opened for tourism. There some small tourism destination like ‘Guam’ is trying to attract tourists on the name of Vaccination Tourism.  In other words a now purpose of tourism has been emerged as  Sun, Sea and Shot(3S) Tourism.  But the new forms of tourism which tourism designers have been claiming as tourism, are basically temporary tourism. Temporary tourism has short life span and therefore its purely marketing and business oriented. Here business means profit(money) and marketing means creation of market. 

Temporary Tourism is required to compensate the loss from pandemic like Corona (Covid19). And the destinations that are being trying to promote should be welcomed and need to be appreciated. Life is short and everyone has right to enjoy the life. According to the quote of one famous industrialist, hotelier and philanthropist Ratan Tata, “We all are tourists and God is our travel agent who already fixed all our routes, reservations and destinations. So trust him and enjoy the Trip called  Life.”

Developing nations should come forward to tap these emerging opportunities from the globalized markets. This is the best time when these nations should come together to attract tourists by providing conducive environment for tourists. These countries should open their airports to entrain tourists. Vaccinations program could help in attracting tourists and creating new markets to sustain in future. Specific tourism circuit can be designed and opened for these tourists by providing special passage and package which will enable them to explore and rejoice during the pandemic. 

Such destination should be laced with advanced healthcare system and experienced workers to leave no stone unturned to provide entire satisfaction to the tourists. The following framework could be developed to attract the tourists.

The above framework consist of service providers who will provide services, tourism organisations- who will provide detail information about emerging markets and brief to service providers regarding need of market. Ministry of exterior or foreign affairs who will guide civil aviation ministry to prepare need based travel formalities and visa. And the ministry of tourism who will focus on emerging area of temporary tourism and its types. All the ministries, Organisation and service providers should work together to grab attention of market by generating interest through various online demonstration regarding offers, discounts, membership advantages and sound healthcare system with quality service. In addition to that scope for community services should also be highlighted. Focus should be also given to highlighting agri-farm visits, availability of organic food items and future advantage.

CASE OF GUAM – AMERICAN OUTPOST

 Vaccine snob’ travelers head to Guam for sun, sea — and shots. Travel restrictions and lockdown has put a lot of pressure on the mind of travellers and tourists who used to go for an international trip or nearest domestic destinations for temporary change from busy life schedules. Destination like Barbados wants you to work from its finest beaches  during the pandemic. While an increasing number of tourism-reliant countries, such as Italy and Thailand, recognize vaccination records for travel, a vacation abroad remains off-limits for millions of the unvaccinated. Enter Guam, a U.S. territory with ample vaccine supplies and no quarantine restrictions, where more than 80 percent of the eligible population is fully vaccinated. For residents of Taiwan, South Korea and elsewhere, three weeks on a tropical island plus the chance to get doubly dosed equal an opportunity they can’t always get at home because of supply shortages and access issues. Around the world, tourism-dependent places have come up with creative ideas to try to jump-start business devastated by the pandemic(The Washington Post, 2021).

OTHER COUNTRIES

Spain, Italy and UAE has also opened its door for fully vaccinated tourists. Destination like Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh in India where 100 percent of the eligible population is fully vaccinated are ready to welcome the tourists from different corners of the world as a special case in this Corona pandemic. Sikkim in India is one of the finest  and healthy tourism destination where 100 percent organic food from farming is available. Similarly countries like Maldives, Thailand and Ethiopia has also planned to entertain fully vaccinated tourists. Ethiopia is a country where number of Corona cases are less in comparison to  similar category of economically developing countries in the African continent. Ethiopia can be explored as ecotourism, wildlife tourism and health tourism destination. Similarly other destination are coming up with creative and innovative ideas of temporary tourism like Sun Sea and Shot.

CONCLUSION

Temporary Tourism like Sun, Sea and Shot and Vaccination Tourism would definitely help in getting tractions from prospective client and tourism markets. Emerging tourism destinations and developing nations should immediately focus on temporary tourism to make their destinations most happening tourism destination in long term perspective. Flexible travel formalities with new type of visa like Corona tourist visa could be offered to meet the need of tourism markets. It is said opportunity never knocks the door again and again. So destination need to grab it by opening their tourism door. 

LIMITATIONS

Any generalised idea may not be right due to variations in size, goal, changing perceptions, literatures reviewed and region followed.
