Abstract
Religious tourist destinations and other similar sacred places are facing serious threats from the uncontrolled and unregulated flow of tourists visiting for pleasure and entertainment. Religious places are on the verge of losing their peace, sanctity and individuality due to the influx of large number of tourists. The aim of this paper was to throw light on the increasing crowd at religious tourist destinations, the causes of stampedes and their changing nature. An attempt has been made to know the causes and measures of crowding as problems and solutions. The research has three phases and involves secondary data collection from printed and electronic media such as journals, books, newspapers, social media, blogs, digital sources and other information available on the internet. For reference, major stampedes in India from the year 2003 to January 2025 have been taken into consideration. The primary data in this research is based on observations. This paper will have great social, religious and economic implications and will provide a roadmap and conceptual framework for further research on related topics.
