What Policyholders Should Know About Policybazaar, TataAIG, and Care Health Insurance

An independent consumer perspective on health insurance, policy portability, customer service, and the challenges faced by middle-aged policyholders in India (based on true experience dt.July'2026 to September '2026).

Introduction: Choosing the Right Health Insurance Company

Health insurance and medical insurance have become essential financial safeguards in India, particularly as healthcare expenses continue to rise. However, purchasing a policy is only the first step. Understanding its terms, receiving quality customer service, renewing it without interruption, and successfully transferring it to another insurer when necessary are equally important.

Among the prominent names in India's insurance sector are Policybazaar, Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited, and Care Health Insurance Company Limited. These companies operate in different capacities within the insurance ecosystem, offering insurance products, advisory services, and policy-related assistance to customers.

This article examines the opportunities and challenges associated with these companies, particularly in relation to health insurance, medical insurance, policy portability, customer service, and the difficulties that some policyholders may encounter as they approach middle age.

The observations and criticisms presented here are based on the author's personal experiences, interactions with other policyholders, and references to newspaper and media reports. They represent the author's perspective and should not be interpreted as a verified finding against every company or customer transaction.

1. Understanding the Companies and Their Parent Organisations

Before purchasing or transferring an insurance policy, customers should understand the distinction between an insurance company and an insurance intermediary or advisory platform.

Policybazaar — PB Fintech Limited

Policybazaar is one of India's prominent online insurance comparison and advisory platforms. Its parent company is PB Fintech Limited, while its insurance brokerage business operates through Policybazaar Insurance Brokers Private Limited.

The platform enables customers to compare insurance products offered by different insurers, helping them evaluate premiums, coverage, benefits, exclusions, add-on riders, waiting periods, and other policy features before making a decision.

Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited — Tata Group and AIG

Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited is a joint venture between the Tata Group and American International Group (AIG).

The company offers a range of general insurance products, including health, motor, travel, and other insurance solutions.

Care Health Insurance Company Limited — Religare Group

Care Health Insurance Company Limited, formerly known as Religare Health Insurance Company Limited, is a specialised health insurance provider associated with the Religare Group.

The company offers various health insurance products, including individual, family, and specialised medical coverage.

Understanding the identity of the insurer, its ownership structure, and the role of any intermediary is important because the insurance company—not merely the platform through which the policy is purchased—is responsible for the policy's contractual obligations.

2. Policybazaar: An Online Insurance Comparison and Advisory Platform

Policybazaar has transformed the way many Indian customers research and purchase insurance products.

One of its major advantages is the ability to compare multiple insurance policies online before selecting a product that suits an individual's financial circumstances and healthcare requirements.

Customers can examine several important factors, including:

  • Premium amounts and payment options
  • Sum insured and coverage limits
  • Hospitalisation and medical expenses
  • Add-on benefits and riders
  • Waiting periods and pre-existing disease exclusions
  • No-claim bonus provisions
  • Cashless hospital networks
  • Claim settlement information and policy conditions

The platform also provides customer assistance through online consultations, telephone support, and other advisory services.

For many customers, this approach can save time, simplify the comparison process, and potentially help them identify a more suitable policy within their budget.

However, customers should remember that comparing policies is only one part of the decision-making process. The actual policy wording, exclusions, underwriting requirements, and claims procedures must also be examined carefully.

3. Health Insurance Portability: A Useful Right That Can Become a Difficult Experience

Health insurance portability is an important facility that allows policyholders to seek a transfer from one insurer to another while retaining eligible continuity benefits, subject to applicable regulations and the receiving insurer's underwriting process.

Portability can be particularly useful when:

  • The existing insurer increases premiums substantially.
  • The policyholder is dissatisfied with customer service.
  • The coverage or benefits no longer meet the customer's requirements.
  • The customer finds a potentially more suitable policy with another insurer.
  • The policyholder has concerns about the insurer's claims-related performance.

In principle, portability provides customers with greater freedom and flexibility.

However, based on the author's personal experience and interactions with other customers, the actual process can sometimes become frustrating and uncertain.

The challenges faced during policy portability

Some customers may experience prolonged documentation requirements, repeated verification requests, delays in communication, or uncertainty regarding the receiving insurer's final decision.

A particularly difficult situation can arise when a policyholder continues to wait for a portability decision while the existing policy's renewal deadline approaches.

The customer may then face an uncomfortable choice: renew the existing policy despite dissatisfaction or risk a disruption in insurance coverage while waiting for the proposed transfer.

From the customer's perspective, such an experience can create considerable anxiety, particularly when the process appears to extend unnecessarily.

It is important to clarify that portability applications may legitimately require medical underwriting, additional documentation, and risk assessment. However, customers deserve timely communication, clear explanations, and transparency regarding the status and outcome of their applications.

4. Policy Portability at the Age of 45–55: Why Customers Should Be Particularly Careful

The difficulties associated with health insurance portability can become more significant as individuals enter their late forties and early fifties.

During this period, many people begin to experience age-related health concerns or develop medical conditions that may influence insurance underwriting.

As a result, customers may find that a new insurer evaluates their applications differently from when they were younger.

Some policyholders may encounter:

  • Additional medical examinations
  • Requests for detailed medical records
  • Questions about existing health conditions
  • Revised premium quotations
  • Special underwriting conditions
  • Requests for further clarification
  • Delays or rejection of portability applications

These possibilities can make switching insurers more complicated for middle-aged customers.

The importance of continuity

For an individual who has maintained health insurance for many years, continuity of coverage can be extremely valuable.

A customer may have accumulated eligible waiting-period credits and other continuity benefits under an existing policy. Losing or disrupting these benefits can create financial uncertainty, particularly when the customer is approaching retirement or has limited future earning capacity.

Therefore, customers should never assume that a new insurer will automatically accept a portability request simply because the existing policy has been renewed regularly.

The safest approach is to obtain written confirmation of the new insurer's decision and applicable continuity benefits before allowing the existing policy to lapse.

5. Tata AIG and Care Health Insurance: Why Customers Should Examine Portability Experiences Carefully

The author's personal experiences and discussions with other policyholders have raised concerns about health insurance portability and customer service involving Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited and Care Health Insurance Company Limited.

The concerns described include prolonged documentation, repeated verification, uncertainty regarding application status, and dissatisfaction with the communication received during the portability process.

In the author's view, these experiences raise important questions about the transparency and efficiency of the customer journey.

However, it would be inappropriate to conclude that every customer has encountered the same difficulties or that either company deliberately engages in improper practices. Such conclusions would require independently verified evidence.

What customers should examine before choosing either insurer

Customers considering Tata AIG or Care Health Insurance should carefully review:

  1. Portability requirements: Understand the medical information, documents, and eligibility criteria required for transferring an existing policy.

  2. Underwriting conditions: Ask whether the proposed transfer could involve additional medical assessments, revised premiums, exclusions, or other conditions.

  3. Communication standards: Confirm how application updates and final decisions will be communicated.

  4. Policy continuity: Obtain written details of the waiting-period credits and other benefits that will be carried forward.

  5. Renewal protection: Understand the terms governing renewal of the existing policy while the portability application is being processed.

  6. Customer grievance procedures: Identify the official channels available if the application is delayed or the decision is disputed.

The purpose of these precautions is not to discourage customers from choosing a particular insurer, but to encourage informed decisions based on documented policy terms and individual requirements.

6. Renewal Calls, Discounts, and the Customer's Right to Choose

Another issue that some customers may encounter is the frequency of renewal-related communication from their existing insurer.

When a policyholder expresses an intention to transfer to another company, the existing insurer may continue contacting the customer with renewal reminders, revised quotations, discounts, or alternative premium options.

Such communication can be useful when it provides genuine opportunities for customers to reconsider their coverage.

However, repeated calls and promotional messages can become frustrating when customers have already made an informed decision.

Customers should also be cautious about evaluating an insurance policy solely on the basis of a discounted premium.

A lower premium does not necessarily mean better coverage, just as a higher premium does not automatically guarantee superior claims service.

Before renewing or transferring a policy, customers should compare the complete terms, including coverage limits, exclusions, waiting periods, room-rent restrictions, co-payment requirements, and claim procedures.

7. Claim Settlement Ratios and Insurance Company Performance

Claim settlement information is an important consideration when selecting a health insurance provider.

Customers frequently compare claim settlement ratios, incurred claim ratios, claim processing information, and other performance indicators before purchasing a policy.

However, these figures should be interpreted carefully.

A claim settlement ratio alone does not necessarily reveal:

  • The average time taken to settle claims
  • The reasons for claim rejection
  • The proportion of claims settled without deductions
  • The quality of customer communication
  • The number of complaints received
  • The experience of customers during policy portability

Customers should therefore review multiple indicators rather than relying on a single numerical measure.

They should also verify the relevant reporting period and consult official regulatory disclosures wherever possible.

A balanced assessment of an insurer requires consideration of both financial indicators and the practical experience of policyholders.

8. Are Insurance Companies Prioritising Profits Over Customer Welfare?

Health insurance companies operate within a commercial environment in which premiums, medical costs, underwriting risks, claims, and profitability all influence business decisions.

From the customer's perspective, however, insurance is more than a financial product. It is a safeguard intended to provide support during medical emergencies and periods of financial vulnerability.

The author's experience has created the impression that some customers may feel particularly vulnerable when they approach middle age, especially when their health conditions become more complicated and their ability to absorb higher premiums decreases.

This concern deserves serious consideration.

Insurance providers and intermediaries should ensure that their customers receive transparent information, fair consideration, and timely communication throughout the policy lifecycle.

Customers who have maintained insurance coverage for many years should not be left uncertain about their future protection simply because they wish to explore a different insurer.

Ultimately, the long-term credibility of the insurance industry depends not only on selling policies but also on maintaining customer confidence through responsible servicing and transparent practices.

9. Practical Precautions Before Buying or Porting a Health Insurance Policy

Before purchasing a new policy or initiating portability, customers should take the following precautions.

Before applying for portability

  • Start the process well before the existing policy's renewal date.
  • Disclose all relevant medical conditions accurately.
  • Keep copies of the existing policy and renewal records.
  • Maintain copies of all medical reports and supporting documents.
  • Request written confirmation of the portability application's status.
  • Obtain written confirmation of acceptance and applicable continuity benefits.
  • Do not cancel or allow the existing policy to lapse prematurely.

Before renewing an existing policy

  • Compare the revised premium with alternative policies.
  • Review any changes in coverage, exclusions, and policy conditions.
  • Examine the insurer's latest official claim-related disclosures.
  • Evaluate the quality of customer support and grievance handling.
  • Consider long-term affordability, especially as retirement approaches.

If a portability application is delayed or rejected

  • Request a written explanation of the decision.
  • Preserve emails, application references, and communication records.
  • Escalate the matter through the insurer's official grievance mechanism.
  • Consider approaching the appropriate insurance grievance or regulatory channel if the issue remains unresolved.

Customers should remember that a portability application is not guaranteed acceptance. However, they are entitled to seek clarity regarding the process and the reasons for the decision.

Role of IRDAI

The role of IRDAI in resolving the policy "Port" issues was not at all satisfactory. And ultimately consumer will have to take their "policy port" matter to consumer courts only to resolve the disputes.  It was assumed to be favouring the Insurance companies only.

Conclusion: Prevention, Awareness, and Informed Insurance Decisions

Health insurance is one of the most important financial protections an individual or family can maintain. However, selecting an insurance provider requires more than comparing premium amounts or promotional offers.

Policybazaar, Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited, and Care Health Insurance Company Limited occupy significant positions in India's insurance ecosystem, but customers should independently assess the suitability of each product and the quality of service they can reasonably expect.

The author's personal experiences and observations suggest that health insurance portability can sometimes become a stressful process, particularly for customers between the ages of 45 and 55.

These concerns highlight the importance of greater transparency, effective communication, responsible underwriting, and customer-focused servicing.

The most important lesson for policyholders is simple: do not make an insurance decision based solely on promises, discounts, or attractive premium quotations. Examine the policy, document every communication, understand the portability conditions, and protect the continuity of your existing coverage.

An informed customer is better equipped to protect both their health and their hard-earned savings.

And don't think/assume that IRDAI or concerned regulatory bodies will resolve your issues.
